In this week’s StaffingHub Brief, we’re covering:
- Temp employment grew for the eighth straight month, and the SIA | Bullhorn Staffing Indicator reached a 2026 record high.
- CTI Staffing acquired PeopleServe with more deals on the way, while Airswift added three NTG business lines and grew its US contractor base by 30%.
- Workers are teaching themselves AI skills faster than their employers are training them, and 53% of AI job postings don’t match established job titles.
Temp labor and staffing hours are on the rise
Temp employment added 6,800 jobs in August, the eighth straight monthly gain and the best year-over-year performance since October 2022. The 1.5% YoY improvement brings total temp jobs to roughly 2.5 million. Total nonfarm payrolls added 162,000 jobs, well above the Bloomberg estimate of 55,000. While industry growth seems to be trending up, SIA notes that “growth is not consistent across firms, geographies or client verticals.”(Learn more)
The SIA | Bullhorn Staffing Indicator through August 29 reached a new 2026 high, with the overall index at 103 and staffing hours up 10% year-over-year. Industrial is up 16% YoY, thanks to manufacturing and data center demand. IT is up 6%, and professional rose 8%. But office and clerical is down 7% YoY. (Learn more)
On the client side, 61% of employers expect revenue growth by 2027, but only 50% plan to add headcount. Contingent labor falls within that 11-point difference. Companies are projecting more output with the same headcount, and someone has to fill the space. (Learn more)
Two deals this week, and one CEO says more are coming
CTI Staffing acquired PeopleServe on August 21, picking up the Boston-based firm to expand its East Coast tech staffing reach and move into financial and insurance staffing. The combined firm now runs 200+ employees. CEO Jason Silver called it “the first in a series of strategic acquisitions” and said the market is “ripe for strategic rollups” among firms with technology leverage and efficient processes. Airswift acquired NTG Ventures, NTG Rig Personnel, and NTG Auburn, adding 30% to its US contractor base. Airswift now operates 9,000+ contractors across 60+ offices globally, with expanded reach into drilling and completions, project management, and technical advisory. This increases the competition for energy staffing specialists. (Learn more)
Workers are out-learning employers on AI, leading to a sourcing challenge
Nearly half of job seekers (47%) developed AI skills in the past six months, up from 41% a year ago, but only about 16% received any employer-provided training. Most workers are teaching themselves and are limited to basic tools, with 61% using ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini. Only 18% have prompt engineering skills, and only 17% have any ML development experience. (Learn more)
The job postings aren’t helping. Andela’s analysis of 47,101 Fortune 500 postings found 53% of AI/ML roles require skills that don’t match any existing job title. There are 23 recurring skill bundles with no standard name, including 6,758 postings calling for “LLM Application Engineer” skills without ever using the title. If your clients can’t define what they’re hiring for, your recruiters can’t source for it. (Learn more)
