The number of job openings on the last business day of May held steady at 8.1 million, the same amount recorded in April. This comes from the most recent BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover report. 

Where job openings increased

  • State and local government, excluding education (+117,000)
  • Durable goods manufacturing (+97,000)
  • Health care and social assistance (+78,000)
  • Professional and business services (+44,000)
  • Federal government (+37,000)

Where job openings decreased

  • Accommodation and food services (-147,000)
  • Private educational services (-34,000)
  • Real estate and rental and leasing (-32,000)
  • Other services (-16,000)
  • Retail trade (-16,000)

The number of hires and total separations also saw little change, coming in at 5.8 million and 5.4 million, respectively.
