Job openings remained relatively stable at 7.2 million in July, down slightly from 7.4 million in June, according to the latest report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Healthcare and social assistance (-181,000), arts, entertainment, and recreation (-62,000), and mining and logging (-13,000) posted decreases in job openings over the month, while construction saw a notable increase (+64,000).

Other updates on labor turnover included:

  • The number of hires remained unchanged at 5.3 million in July, with the hiring rate holding at 3.3%. Other services had the largest increase in hires over the month (+86,000).
  • Quits were essentially flat at 3.2 million in July, with the quits rate steady at 2.0%. Professional and business services saw quits increase (+197,000), while construction (-80,000) and transportation, warehousing, and utilities (-49,000) experienced decreases.
  • Layoffs and discharges remained unchanged at 1.8 million over the month, with a significant drop in professional and business services (-130,000) and a slight increase in federal government (+5,000).
