The number of people quitting their jobs in April was little changed at 4.4 million according to recently released BLS data. This follows March’s series high of 4.5 million. The quits rate also changed little, coming in at 2.9% for the month.
There were 11.4 million open jobs in April, an decrease of 455,000 from the previous month.
Where job openings increased
- Transportation, warehousing, and utilities (+97,000)
- Nondurable goods manufacturing (+67,000)
- Durable goods manufacturing (+53,000)
- Other services (+44,000)
- Real estate and rental and leasing (+35,000)
Where job openings decreased
- Health care and social assistance (-266,000)
- Retail trade (-162,000)
- Professional and business services (-149,000)
- Accommodation and food services (-113,000)
- Arts, entertainment, and recreation (-34,000)
- Federal government (-34,000)
Net employment increased over the 12 months ending in April, with hires totaling 78.0 million and separations totaling 71.6 million (which include quits, layoffs, discharges, and other separations), reflecting a total net employment gain of 6.4 million.
