The staffing industry was a “bright spot” for the economy last year, according to American Staffing Association (ASA) president and CEO Richard Wahlquist. Data from the ASA Staffing Employment and Sales Survey show that total annual sales for the industry reached a record high of $159.1 billion in 2022, up 10.3% from 2021.

Last year, U.S. staffing companies employed an average of over 2.8 million temporary and contract workers per week, a 2.9% increase from 2021. A total of 14.6 million of these employees were hired in 2022, up from 14.1 million the previous year. Meanwhile, the average length of employment was relatively unchanged.

“The staffing industry is very proud of the role it played in the past year in helping more than 14 and a half million job seekers connect with meaningful work,” Wahlquist said in a blog post. “And with nearly two job openings for every unemployed person in America, staffing companies continue to play an extremely important role in helping American businesses fill millions of job openings with the qualified they need.”
