The number of job openings was little changed on the last day of November 2023, coming in at 8.8 million according to the latest BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover report. This is a slight increase from October’s 8.7 million openings.
Where job openings increased
- Wholesale trade (+63,000)
- Construction (+43,000)
- Retail trade (+42,000)
- Finance and insurance (+37,000)
- Other services (+29,000)
Where job openings decreased
- Transportation, warehousing, and utilities (-128,000)
- Accommodation and food services (-78,000)
- Federal government (-58,000)
- Nondurable goods manufacturing (-36,000)
- Professional and business services (-33,000)
The number of quits decreased to 3.5 million from October’s 3.6 million, and the quits rate was 2.2%. Quits dropped notably in professional and business services (-77,000), but the number of hires in professional and business services also declined (-163,000).
