The number of job openings rose slightly (up by 259,000 from October), totaling 8.1 million in November, according to the latest report from The Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is 833,000 less than the number of jobs openings in November 2023.
Industries where job openings increased most included professional and business services (+273,000) and financial activities (+114,000), while job openings declined in accommodations and food services (-102,000), information (-89,000), and manufacturing (-56,000).
Updates on labor turnover included:
- The number of hires, at 5.3 million, changed little over the month of November, but hires are down 300,000 from last year.
- Quits dropped by 218,000 to 3.1 million in November. The number of quits is 451,000 below November 2023.
- Layoffs and discharges totaled 1.8 million in November, a small increase of 17,000 from October and a jump of 219,000 from last year.
